Tucked back from the main road in the heart of old Candolim village, Our Lady of Hope is the parish church and the historic centre of the place that became a beach resort. It was first built in 1661 and rebuilt in the 19th century in the typical Goan-Portuguese style — bright whitewashed walls, blue trim, and a small forecourt.
The church is rarely open outside service times, but it is worth wandering past to remember that Candolim was a Catholic village long before it was a string of beach shacks. The annual feast day in October draws much of the local community back from across the diaspora.
