Candolim is a good base for exploring North Goa. The Portuguese-era churches of Old Goa, the riverside capital Panaji, and the hippy beaches further north at Anjuna are all within an hour by taxi or scooter. Mapusa's Friday market is the place to find spices, cashews, and feni — the local cashew liquor.
