Archaeological Museum and Portrait Gallery

The Archaeological Museum occupies part of the former Convent of St Francis of Assisi, immediately adjacent to the Church of St Francis. The collection includes sculpture and stonework from the pre-Portuguese period — Hindu temple sculpture, sati stones, and hero stones — alongside colonial-era portraits of Portuguese viceroys and governors. The portrait gallery is one of the most complete records of the Portuguese colonial administration in India.

The museum is compact and free to enter, and the building itself — with its cloistered courtyard and stone-flagged corridors — is part of the interest. The church attached to the convent is separately maintained and contains some of the finest painted tile panels in Goa.
