Monkey Island

Monkey Island — known locally as Canagaim Island — is the tied island at the north end of Palolem Beach. At low tide you can wade across in waist-deep water; at high tide it is a short swim or a quick paddle by kayak. A small troop of bonnet macaques lives on the rocks; do not bring food, since they have learned to grab from the hands of casual visitors.

The trees on top open onto a small viewpoint over the bay. The island is half an hour out and back, a worthwhile mid-morning errand before the heat builds.
