Gabbar Hill

Gabbar Hill gives Ambaji its climb. The small shrine on top is sacred to devotees of Amba, and the hilltop looks back across the town and the dry folds of the Aravalli range. It is the best place in Ambaji to feel the landscape as well as the pilgrimage.

You can climb the steps if you want the traditional approach, or use the ropeway when heat, knees, or time make that a bad idea. Go early or late in the day. Midday sun can make the ascent feel much longer than it looks from town.

A story
Local tradition treats Gabbar Hill as the original seat of the goddess, the place where the heart of Sati fell in the Shaktipeeth legend. The eternal flame at the hill shrine keeps that story visible even for visitors who come mainly for the view.
