Golden Bridge

The century-old road bridge connecting Bharuch to Ankleshwar across the Narmada

The Golden Bridge, built by the British in the 1880s, spans the Narmada between Bharuch and Ankleshwar on the south bank. It was for decades the only fixed crossing of the lower Narmada and carries dense traffic. The bridge itself is not particularly spectacular architecturally, but the view from it — down the wide Narmada towards the Gulf of Khambhat, with the Bharuch fort visible on the hill to the west — is the best vantage point in the city.

Walking across is feasible early in the morning before traffic builds. The Silver Jubilee Railway Bridge runs alongside, carrying the Western Railway main line — trains cross regularly and the combination of road and rail on adjacent bridges makes for a lively few minutes.
