Bharuch

Ancient Gujarat trading port on the Narmada River near the Gulf of Khambhat.

Bharuch is one of the oldest trading ports in India, sitting on the banks of the Narmada river where it meets the Gulf of Khambhat. Known in ancient times as Bharakuccha, it was a regular stop on the spice and silk trade routes between East and West -- Greek, Roman, and Arab traders all knew this port.

The 150-year-old Golden Bridge connects Bharuch to Ankleshwar across the Narmada. The old bazaar in the city centre is crowded but fascinating. On the riverbank in nearby Zadeshwar, the Nilkantheshwar Temple is worth a visit for its riverside setting.

Getting There

Bharuch is on the main Western Railway line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, with frequent express trains stopping at Bharuch Junction. Journey times are around 3.5 hours from Mumbai and 2.5 hours from Ahmedabad. The station is centrally located, 10–15 minutes by auto-rickshaw from the fort and old bazaar.

By road, Bharuch is on National Highway 48 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, about 400 km from Mumbai and 100 km from Ahmedabad. State and private buses connect it to Surat (about 60 km south) and other Gujarat towns. The nearest airport is Surat.

Things to Do

Bharuch rewards a few hours of exploration: the fort on the hill above town, the Narmada riverfront, and the old bazaar quarter make a compact circuit. The city's real draw is its ancient trading history — this was a port known to Greeks, Romans, and Arab navigators — rather than any single monument. Most visitors pass through en route to the Narmada dam sites or the coastal resorts further south.
