In the heart of old Jamnagar, a long curved colonnade of identical arched shopfronts faces onto a central square. This is the Willingdon Crescent — also called Chelmsford Market — built in the 1920s by Maharaja Ranjitsinhji as part of a sweeping reorganisation of the old city centre.
Today it is the city's main bazaar: fabric shops, jewellers, spice merchants, sweet stalls, and small restaurants under the colonnade. The Crescent is the place to look for bandhani textiles — the silver- and gold-embroidered tie-dye work that Jamnagar is famous for. Even without buying, an hour walking under the arcades is one of the more rewarding things to do in town.
