The area around Gandhidham Junction railway station is lined with small food stalls that open before dawn to catch the early train traffic. The speciality is dal pakwan — a Sindhi breakfast staple consisting of crisp deep-fried flatbread served with thick yellow lentil dal, tamarind chutney, and a fierce green chilli paste. It is one of the most distinctive dishes in Kutch, and Gandhidham may be the best place in India to eat it, given the concentration of Sindhi families who have been making it for generations.
Stalls are typically makeshift affairs — a griddle, a pot of dal, and a few plastic stools — but the food is excellent. The busiest time is between 6am and 9am. If you are catching an early train, arriving at the station half an hour early to eat breakfast at one of these stalls is a good use of the time. Prices are minimal — expect to pay around ₹30–50 for a generous portion.
