Sindhi Market

The central market area of Gandhidham — known informally as the Sindhi Market — is the commercial and cultural core of the city. It grew organically from the trading traditions of the Sindhi community, who arrived in 1947 with little more than their entrepreneurial instincts and rebuilt a mercantile culture from scratch. Today the market is a dense grid of wholesale and retail shops dealing in textiles, spice, hardware, and household goods, supplying much of the Kutch district.

The atmosphere is particularly lively in the early morning, when traders set up food stalls serving traditional Sindhi breakfast dishes. Dal pakwan — crispy fried flatbread with a thick, tangy yellow dal and chutneys — is the signature dish and worth seeking out at the small stalls near the market entrance. The market is most active from morning until early afternoon, slowing considerably in the heat of mid-day.
