Modhera Vav (Stepwell)

Gujarat is famous for its vavs — elaborately carved stepwells that were once central to both the practical water supply and the religious life of communities across the region. The Modhera Vav, located within the Sun Temple complex area, is one of the smaller but still beautifully preserved examples. Like all Solanki-era stepwells, it descends in a series of carved stone tiers to the water level, with ornamental pillars and decorative friezes at each landing.

Stepwells in the Gujarat tradition were designed as cool retreats where women could gather, rest, and socialise during the heat of the day — the underground galleries remain several degrees cooler than the surface even in summer. The Modhera Vav is drier than it once was, and it is less famous than the great vavs at Patan, but it is worth examining closely as part of the wider complex. The carved details are characteristic of the Solanki workshop tradition.
