Triund Trek

The Triund trek is the classic day walk from McLeod Ganj — a steep but manageable climb through rhododendron and oak forest to a broad grassy ridge at 2,975 metres, with front-row views of the Dhauladhar peaks and the Kangra Valley spread below. The trailhead is at Dharamkot, a 30-minute walk above McLeod Ganj, and the climb takes three to four hours at a comfortable pace.

The ridge has a small tea stall and a Forest Department rest house, and camping is permitted (though crowded on weekends). More ambitious walkers continue from Triund toward Lahesh Cave and the snow line at Ilaqa — an option that turns the day walk into an overnight trek. The path is clear and well-used; no guide is required, though the descent in wet weather can be slippery. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the weekend crowd.

A story
The Dhauladhar range rises so abruptly from the Kangra Valley that from McLeod Ganj you can see snow-capped peaks at 4,000 metres while standing at 1,500 metres. Triund sits at the base of this wall of mountains, where the forested slopes give way to alpine meadow and the full force of the Himalayan landscape becomes apparent. On a clear night, the stars from the ridge are extraordinary.
