Paonta Sahib

Paonta Sahib is a major Sikh pilgrimage town on the right bank of the Yamuna at the southeastern edge of Sirmaur district. The white-marble gurdwara, built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century on the site where Guru Gobind Singh held his court, is one of the most important historic gurdwaras outside Punjab.

A small museum holds weapons and manuscripts associated with the Guru. The town below the gurdwara is the practical centre of the southern Sirmaur economy, with a busy bazaar and ferries across the Yamuna into Uttarakhand. The langar (community kitchen) at the gurdwara serves free meals to all visitors.

A story
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru, lived in Paonta from 1685 to 1688 and is said to have composed much of the Dasam Granth here, on the banks of the Yamuna. The site of his daily court — a small stone platform under a tree — is preserved within the gurdwara complex.
