Southern Himachal district where Shivalik hill towns and pilgrimage sites meet the plains
Sirmour is the southernmost district of Himachal Pradesh, tucked into the Shivalik Hills where the mountains begin their descent toward the Indo-Gangetic plain. The district headquarters is Nahan, a pleasant hill town with a colonial-era layout and a genuine lack of tourist crowds. Other worthwhile stops include Paonta Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage town on the Yamuna River, and Renuka Lake, the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh, sacred to the goddess Renuka.
For walkers, the great climb of the district is Churdhar Peak, the highest outer-Himalayan summit at 3,647 metres, topped by a temple to the local deity Shirgul. Closer to Nahan, the ruined Jaitak Fort on a nearby ridge was the scene of one of the hardest-fought British actions of the 1814 Anglo-Nepalese War.

Getting There
The most common approach is by road from Delhi, roughly 284 km via Ambala and Chandigarh — expect five to six hours by bus or taxi. Regular services run from Delhi, Shimla, Ambala, and Chandigarh to Nahan and Paonta Sahib. The nearest major railway station is Ambala, and the nearest commercial airport is Chandigarh, both around two to three hours away by road.

When to Go
October to March is the most reliable time to visit — clear skies, cool air at the upper elevations, mild winters in the lower towns like Paonta Sahib. April and May are hot in the foothills but pleasant up at Churdhar. The monsoon from late June to early September brings heavy rain, road washouts, and the risk of landslides on the routes to Renuka and Churdhar — best avoided. The Renuka Fair, held over the November full moon, is the year's biggest event.
