Jagannath Temple, Nahan

The Jagannath Temple in the centre of Nahan was built in 1681 by Raja Budh Prakash, around the time the town was founded. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the form of Vishnu worshipped at Puri, and reflects the dynastic connection between the Sirmaur royal family and the Bay of Bengal pilgrimage circuit.

The temple is a modest stone structure in the local hill style with a small shikhara tower, set in a courtyard with subsidiary shrines. It is open for worship throughout the day. The annual Bawan Dwadashi festival in late August, when images of fifty-two gods of Sirmaur are paraded around the town, is one of the most distinctive religious events in Himachal Pradesh.
