Things to Do

Just forty kilometres by road from Joginder Nagar, Barot (1,830 m) packs an enormous range of outdoor activities into a compact valley. The reservoir of the Joginder Nagar Hydel Power Project is here, along with a trout breeding centre that makes it a fine spot for angling. Across the River Uhl lies the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary, home to ghoral, Himalayan black bear, and a variety of pheasants. A trek route through thick forests links Barot to Kullu, with rest houses at Thaltukhod and Silbadhwani.

Barot is surrounded by thick deodar trees and is best visited in summer. There are three government rest houses, and locals increasingly offer home stays for a nominal price with warm hospitality. The nearby villages of Jhatingiri and Luharidi remain totally unspoiled, with livelihoods centred on farming, livestock, and the forests.

The water reservoirs, built during British rule, feed the Bassi Power Station at Jogindernagar. An electric trolley carries visitors up the steep, rocky face of the 2,500-metre mountain and drops down sharply to Barot on the other side -- an experience in itself.
