The most important Muslim shrine in Baramulla, the khanqah commemorates Sheikh Syed Janbaz Wali, a Sufi missionary who arrived in Kashmir in the 14th century along with the great saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. Like many Kashmiri shrines it is built entirely of wood in the regional style, with a pagoda-like roof, painted papier-mâché interior, and a small adjoining mosque.
Pilgrims visit year-round but particularly on the urs (death anniversary) of the saint. Visitors should remove shoes and dress modestly; non-Muslims are generally welcome but the inner sanctum may be restricted during prayer times.
