Baisaran Valley

Baisaran Valley is an alpine meadow 5–7 km above Pahalgam town, reached by a forest trail or by hired horse. The walk takes about two hours through conifer forest, emerging onto a wide, flower-filled meadow with views back down the Lidder Valley and up toward the peaks above. The meadow is at 2,440 m, high enough that the air is noticeably cool even in summer.

The site became internationally known in April 2025 after a terrorist attack killed 26 tourists in the meadow — a tragedy that deeply affected Kashmir's tourism industry. The valley itself is unchanged, and security has been substantially increased in the area. Verify current safety conditions before visiting.

A story
Baisaran is sometimes called "Mini Switzerland" by Indian tourists, a comparison that tells you more about Indian tourism marketing than about Swiss geography — but the valley is genuinely beautiful: a broad alpine meadow surrounded by dense pine and fir forest, with snow-capped peaks visible beyond. The meadow sits at around 2,440 m, about 5 km from Pahalgam town. It is only accessible on foot or by horse (motor vehicles are not permitted), which is the main reason it has retained its character.
