Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley is a wide, flat-floored valley about 15 km from Pahalgam town, at the confluence of the Lidder River and the Sheshnag River. The valley floor is carpeted with grass and wildflowers in summer, flanked by steep forested hillsides and, above them, rocky peaks with residual snow. The Lidder river is fast and clear here, with good stretches for sitting beside.

Access is by road from Pahalgam (the road continues beyond to the Amarnath pilgrimage route). The valley is very popular with Indian tourists, particularly in summer, and can be crowded on weekends. Arrive early morning for the best experience. There are small dhabas (roadside restaurants) selling chai and basic food.

A story
Betaab Valley takes its current name from the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab, which was shot here and introduced the valley to millions of Indian cinema-goers. Before the film, it was simply known as Hajan Valley. The Bollywood connection transformed it into a pilgrimage site for fans of Hindi cinema, and the tourist infrastructure followed. The valley has been a location for dozens of subsequent films; the combination of alpine scenery and Kashmiri light is genuinely cinematic.
