Mamal Temple

Mamal Temple (also called Mamaleshwar Temple) is a Hindu Shiva temple on the banks of the Lidder River in Pahalgam town, one of the oldest religious sites in the Kashmir Valley. The temple complex is small but well-maintained, with a main shrine and several subsidiary structures. It is an active place of worship, particularly visited by Hindu pilgrims who include it as a stop before or after the Amarnath pilgrimage.

The riverside location is attractive, with the fast-flowing Lidder just below the temple terrace and good views up the valley. The temple is open daily; visitors of all faiths are welcome. Remove shoes before entering the shrine area.

A story
Mamal Temple was built during the reign of the Hindu Shahi kingdom in the 9th or 10th century, making it one of the oldest surviving temples in the Kashmir Valley. It predates the conversion of Kashmir to Islam by several centuries. The temple was largely forgotten for long periods and has been restored multiple times; the current structure dates from the late 20th century, though it sits on ancient foundations.
