Gulbarga Fort

Bahmani-era fort enclosing the remarkable domed Jama Masjid, Gulbarga's strongest reason to stop.

Gulbarga Fort is the core of the old Bahmani capital and the main reason to come to the city. Much of the fortification is ruined, but the scale is still clear: thick walls, gateways, open ground and the great Jama Masjid sitting inside the enclosure. The fort feels rough around the edges, which suits Gulbarga better than a polished monument would.

The mosque is the highlight. Its low, vaulted interior is covered by rows of domes rather than opening to the sky, creating a cool, shadowy space that feels quite unlike most Indian mosques. Visit early or late in the day, then combine it with Haft Gumbaz and the shrine of Khwaja Bande Nawaz for a compact Bahmani circuit.

A story
The Jama Masjid inside Gulbarga Fort is often compared to the mosque-cathedral of Cordoba because its prayer hall is covered rather than built around a large open courtyard. Whether or not the Spanish link is literal, the result is one of the strangest and most memorable mosque interiors in the Deccan.
