Karnataka

Varied Indian state spanning Bangalore, Hampi, Coorg, and major temple architecture across the Deccan.

Karnataka is one of India's most varied states — you get the tech boom and craft beer of Bangalore, the hushed ruins of a medieval empire at Hampi, spice plantations in Coorg, and some of the most beautiful temple architecture in the subcontinent, all within a few hours of each other. It rewards slow travel. The more time you give it, the more it reveals.

The capital, Bangalore, has reinvented itself as India's Silicon Valley but hasn't entirely shed its old-city character. Leafy boulevards, buzzing street-food stalls, and the odd colonial-era pub sit side by side with glass towers and rooftop bars. It's a useful base and genuinely enjoyable in its own right.

Hampi is the reason many people come to Karnataka and it doesn't disappoint. The ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire scatter across a boulder-strewn landscape for miles — temples, market streets, royal enclosures — and the whole site is a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Hire a bicycle and give it at least two full days.

Mysore runs Hampi close for sheer atmosphere. The Mysore Palace is one of the most photographed buildings in India and rightly so; on Sunday evenings when it's lit with tens of thousands of bulbs, the effect is genuinely spectacular. The city is also known for silk, sandalwood, and one of the most celebrated Dasara festivals in the country.

The coast along the Arabian Sea — Gokarna, Karwar, Murudeshwar — is quieter and more authentic than Goa to the north. The Ghats rise steeply behind it, and the hill station of Coorg makes an excellent escape into coffee and cardamom country.
