Kudroli Bhagavathi Temple

Mangalore's most vibrant Hindu temple, particularly lively during Navratri

Address Kodialbail, Mangaluru, Karnataka

The Kudroli Shri Bhagavathi Kshetra is Mangalore's most popular Hindu temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhagavathi and located in the busy Kodialbail neighbourhood. The temple complex is large, colourfully painted, and perpetually active — morning and evening puja draw substantial crowds, and the premises include several shrines and a large tank. The atmosphere is genuinely devotional rather than touristy.

The temple is at its most spectacular during the ten-day Dasara celebrations in October, when the goddess is taken out in elaborate procession on a decorated float. Dress conservatively, leave shoes at the entrance, and be prepared for crowds on festival days and weekends. Non-Hindus are generally welcomed as visitors.

A story
The temple was built in 1912 by Shri Narayana Guru, the reformist saint who founded temples open to all castes at a time when low-caste Hindus were barred from most shrines in coastal Karnataka. The Kudroli temple was his direct act of defiance against the caste-based exclusion of temple worship.
