St. Aloysius Chapel

Church with walls and ceiling entirely covered in Jesuit frescoes

Address Light House Hill Road, Hampankatta, Mangaluru

St. Aloysius Chapel is one of the most remarkable church interiors in India. Built by Jesuit missionaries in 1880 on Light House Hill, the chapel is modest from the outside — a simple stone facade — but step through the door and you enter a space that functions more like a painted cave than a place of worship. Every surface, from floor to ceiling arch, is covered in frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ, the saints, and the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. The effect is startling: vivid colours, precise figural work, and a level of craftsmanship that would be extraordinary anywhere in the world.

The college attached to the chapel — St. Aloysius College, founded 1880 — is one of the oldest in Karnataka and shares the same compound. Photography inside the chapel is permitted; arrive before 10am to have the space to yourself. The chapel closes for a couple of hours at midday. Entry involves a small donation.

A story
The frescoes covering every square metre of wall and ceiling were painted between 1899 and 1900 by the Italian Jesuit brother Antonio Moscheni, who worked almost entirely alone. He completed the entire decorative programme — over 50 individual scenes — in just over a year, working from scaffolding in a commission that would have occupied a team of artists for decades.
