Dargah of Hazrat Syed Mohammed Shareeful Madani

The dargah — a Sufi shrine — is the most important religious site in Ullal and draws pilgrims from across the Konkan coast and beyond. The tomb of the 15th-century saint sits within a compound that also contains a mosque and a large gathering hall used during the annual urs festival. The architecture mixes older Portuguese-influenced stonework with more recent additions, giving the compound a layered, lived-in quality.

Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside of prayer times. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming rather than formal. The annual urs, typically held in the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, fills the compound and the surrounding streets with pilgrims, music, and street food stalls.

A story
The saint buried here, Syed Mohammed Shareeful Madani, is said to have arrived on this coast from Medina in the 15th century and to have walked into the sea at the end of his life. The spot where he entered the water is marked, and devotees believe the sea has never been rough at that precise point since.
