Ullal Beach

Ullal Beach is a long, wide stretch of Arabian Sea coastline that has stayed relatively quiet precisely because Mangalore is close enough to offer a city beach without Ullal needing to become one. The sand is dark and fine, the surf comes in strong, and the fishing boats lined up at the southern end add a working-village quality that beach resorts further north lack.

Swimming can be rough depending on the season — the sea is calmer between October and February. During the monsoon the waves are dramatic but dangerous. In the evenings, particularly on weekends, the beach fills with local families and couples walking along the water's edge as the sun sets over the Arabian Sea.

A story
The beach at Ullal was long used by Beary Muslim fishing families who have worked this stretch of coast for generations. The Summer Sands Beach Resort opened in the 1990s and brought Mangaloreans down on weekends, but the fishing community and their colourful boats were here long before the resort and remain its most vivid feature.
