Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi is the historic heart of the city — a small peninsula at the mouth of the Vembanad backwaters, shaped by five centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. The streets are lined with crumbling colonial warehouses, heritage guesthouses in restored merchant houses, art galleries, and some of the city's best cafes and restaurants.

The entire area is small enough to explore on foot in a day, and the combination of history, food, and atmosphere makes it one of the most rewarding places in India to simply wander. The streets around Princess Street and Ridsdale Road have the densest concentration of converted buildings and interesting shops. Fort Kochi is also the base for exploring the backwaters, with boat services departing from the waterfront.
