The eight-hour public ferry from Kollam to Alappuzha is the most celebrated boat journey in Kerala, and one of the most beautiful in India. The ferry leaves the KSWTD terminal at 10:30am daily, winding north through an intricate network of canals, palm-shaded waterways, and open lakes.
You pass through village life at water level — children washing, boats being loaded, fishing nets drying in the sun. The route threads through Munroe Island, where narrow channels wind through mangroves and the water is so still it mirrors the coconut palms perfectly. Bring food and plenty of water; the journey takes most of the day. The ferry is more comfortable than it sounds, with a shaded upper deck and vendors who board at stops to sell chai and snacks.
