Kumarakom sits about 16 km west of Kottayam, which is the nearest railway hub and the most practical arrival point. Trains from Trivandrum, Kochi, and as far north as Mumbai stop at Kottayam. From the station, auto-rickshaws and taxis run to Kumarakom in 30 minutes; homestays and resorts usually arrange pick-ups.
The nearest international airport is Kochi (COK), 85 km north — about two hours by taxi. Trivandrum (TRV) is around 160 km south, about four hours by road. A more characterful route is by boat from Alappuzha across Vembanad Lake; a ferry service runs daily and a private houseboat transfer can be arranged.
