The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a small reserve — only about 14 acres — at the northern edge of the village, but the density of bird life makes it one of the easiest birdwatching destinations in southern India. Egrets, herons, darters, kingfishers, and Indian cormorants are year-round; from November to February, migratory Siberian cranes, larks, and flycatchers arrive in numbers.
Go at dawn, ideally between 6 and 8 am, when activity is highest and the heat manageable. There are well-marked walking paths and a few hides. Combine with a hire of one of the small canoes for a slow paddle along the sanctuary's water boundary, where the bird life is densest. Entry fee is modest; bring binoculars.
