Kalpathy is the most characterful quarter of Palakkad, an old agraharam settlement with narrow temple streets and a strong Tamil Brahmin identity. It feels different from coastal Kerala: drier, more austere, and tied to the cultural traffic through the Palghat Gap.
The annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam chariot festival is the moment to see it at full intensity, when temple cars move through the streets and the neighbourhood fills with pilgrims. Outside festival time, it is still worth a slow walk, especially if you are interested in how Kerala and Tamil Nadu overlap here.
