Payyanur's main draw is theyyam — the extraordinary ritual dance tradition of northern Kerala that transforms performers into deities through elaborate costume and preparation. The season runs from October to May, and the villages around Payyanur are among the best places in Kannur district to witness performances. These are not tourist shows but living religious ceremonies; visitors are generally welcome but should observe quietly and respectfully.
The Kavvayi Backwaters, 4 km from town, are the largest backwaters in northern Kerala — smaller and less commercialised than the famous Alleppey backwaters further south. Boat trips through the network of channels, islands, and coconut palms are a quieter, more genuine experience.
Ezhimala — a coastal hill 12 km north — was once the capital of the ancient Kolathunadu Kingdom and is now home to Asia's largest naval academy. The views from the hill over the Arabian Sea and the coast are excellent.
