Gopachal Parvat

Rock-cut Jain monuments carved into the cliffs below Gwalior Fort.

Gopachal Parvat refers to the rock-cut Jain figures carved into the slopes around Gwalior Fort. Some are monumental, some badly damaged, and some easy to miss if you are focused only on reaching the top. Together they make the ascent feel like a pilgrimage landscape as much as a military approach.

The figures are best seen on the way up or down from the fort, when you can stop and look without making a separate excursion. Wear decent shoes: the roadside viewpoints and paths can be uneven, and the sun on the rock is fierce.

A story
Many of the Jain figures were damaged during the Mughal period and later repaired, leaving a visible history of both iconoclasm and devotion in the same cliff face. The scale is easiest to grasp from the fort road, where the carvings suddenly appear beside the climb.
