Man Mandir Palace

Fort palace of Raja Man Singh Tomar, famous for blue tilework and carved stone screens.

Man Mandir Palace is the most memorable building inside Gwalior Fort. Built under Raja Man Singh Tomar, it combines defensive mass with decorative tilework, projecting balconies and carved interiors. The surviving colour on the exterior is what most visitors remember first.

Inside, the rooms are cooler and darker, with underground levels that carry later stories of imprisonment and court intrigue. Take your time here rather than treating it as a quick photo stop; the palace gives Gwalior its particular mix of severity and elegance.

A story
The palace's cheerful blue and yellow tile friezes once included ducks, elephants and tigers along the outer walls. The colour is startling because so much of the fort is bare ochre stone; it gives the military ridge a flash of courtly theatre.
