Tansen's tomb is a quieter stop than the fort, but for anyone interested in Indian classical music it carries real weight. Tansen, the legendary singer at Akbar's court, is buried near the tomb of the Sufi saint Muhammad Ghaus, linking court music, devotion and Gwalior's long musical reputation.
The complex is best visited without rushing. It is not visually overwhelming, but the atmosphere is gentle and the associations are strong. If your timing matches the annual Tansen music festival, Gwalior becomes far more than a fort-and-palace city.
