Kolhapuri misal is the city's signature breakfast and snack — a bowl of sprouted beans and lentils in a fiery red kat (gravy), topped with crispy farsan, chopped raw onion, and lime, served with bread rolls (pav). The Kolhapur version is notably hotter than the Pune or Mumbai variants, with a deeper colour from local chilies.
The best misal in the city is found in small, unpretentious shops near the temple and in the market area. Prices are low (under ₹100 a plate). The morning rush, when the city's working population stops for breakfast, is the time to eat it. Pairs well with strong, sweet chai. Ask for "extra kat" if you want more gravy and aren't afraid of the heat.
