The plateau behind Deogad is one of the great mango-growing landscapes of India. From March to early June the orchards above town are heavy with Alphonso — the cultivar locals call hapus — and the road in is lined with stalls and crates. The Devgad Taluka Mango Growers' Co-operative sells direct to visitors and ships internationally.
To buy well, drive up onto the plateau and visit an orchard rather than the town stalls. A dozen growers around Mond and Pural villages offer farm visits in season; the better farms sort the fruit by ripeness so you can choose between "eat today," "eat in three days," and so on. Expect to pay several times the price of inferior mangoes sold under the Alphonso name elsewhere; the difference is real.
