Deogad (also written Devgad) is a small coastal town on the Sindhudurga district's northern shore, about 500 km south of Mumbai along the Mumbai–Goa highway. It sits on a narrow peninsula backed by a well-sheltered natural harbour — one of the few ports on this coast that stays navigable during the monsoon. Fishing is the main livelihood here, and the catch comes in daily.
The town is best known outside Maharashtra for its Alphonso mangoes, considered among the finest in the world. From March to June, the local orchards produce fruit prized for its sweetness, low fibre, and deep saffron colour. Visitors who time their trip right can buy directly from growers.
The surrounding taluka has a scattering of temples on quiet beaches, most notably Kunkeshwar on the coast to the north. The pace is unhurried, the coastline largely undeveloped, and the food — fresh seafood cooked in coconut-based Malvani style — is excellent.
