Vijaydurg Fort

Thirty kilometres north of Deogad, on a triangular headland between two creeks, Vijaydurg is one of the finest surviving Maratha sea forts. Shivaji Maharaj rebuilt and expanded it in 1664; for the next century it was the headquarters of the Maratha navy.

The fort has three rings of walls, twenty-seven bastions, secret passages, and a small ornamental tank. Much of it is in good repair. From the seaward bastion you look down on the same waters where Kanhoji Angre fought the East India Company. A direct road runs from Deogad in around an hour, mostly along the coast; the last section is rough.

A story
Vijaydurg was the seat of Kanhoji Angre, the Maratha admiral who held off the English, Dutch, and Portuguese navies for two decades in the early 1700s and effectively closed this stretch of the Konkan coast to European shipping. The fort's submerged outer sea wall — visible at low tide — was an early-warning trap for European warships, which would ground on it within range of the fort's guns.
