Mahabaleshwar has no railway station. The most common route is by road from Pune (120 km, about 2.5–3 hours), which has the nearest major rail head and airport. From Pune's Shivajinagar bus stand, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses run regularly to Mahabaleshwar, taking about 3 hours. Private taxis from Pune are faster and more comfortable.
From Mumbai (280 km), the most practical option is to take the expressway to Pune and continue from there, or take a direct overnight bus. Several private luxury bus operators run the Mumbai–Mahabaleshwar route, taking about 6 hours. From Satara (58 km), the nearest major town, local buses and shared jeeps run throughout the day up the ghat road. The ghat road from Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar is a good paved mountain road with serious hairpin bends — not for the faint-hearted after dark or in the wet season.
