Wilson Point (Sunrise Point)

Wilson Point is the highest point of the Mahabaleshwar plateau and the best place in the hill station to catch the sunrise. The view east over the Sahyadri ranges — row after row of forested ridges catching the first light — is why people set alarms for 5am. The forest around the viewpoint is dense and cool even in peak season.

There is a small charge to enter the Wilson Point area. In season (October to May) vehicles queue for the entry from about 4:30am. Arriving early is essential for both the view and parking. The forest path from the entry point to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes on foot. Bring a warm layer; mornings at this altitude are noticeably cold, even after a warm Pune drive up.

A story
Wilson Point was named after Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay in the 1920s. It is the highest point of the Mahabaleshwar plateau at 1,439 metres — technically four metres higher than the town of Mahabaleshwar itself — and is the only place in the hill station from which you can see both the sunrise (over the ghats) and the sunset (over the Konkan) on a clear day.
