There are no motorised vehicles of any kind inside Matheran. You walk, hire a horse, or use a hand-pulled cart to carry luggage. The town is small enough to cover on foot in an hour; the outlying viewpoints are a 30–60 minute walk depending on which direction you head. Horses for hire are available near the market and at the station — prices are negotiable and fixed rates are often posted; confirm before mounting.
The main paths to the viewpoints are well-marked and clearly walked, though they can be muddy during and after the monsoon. Red Earth Point, Panorama Point, and Louisa Point are the furthest from the centre; Charlotte Lake is closer and a good destination if you have limited time.
