Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly the Prince of Wales Museum) is Mumbai's most comprehensive museum, housed in a magnificent Indo-Saracenic building designed by George Wittet and completed in 1923. The collection spans three main galleries: art, archaeology, and natural history. Highlights include Mughal miniature paintings, a significant collection of Indian decorative arts, ancient Harappan artefacts, and the Jehangir Gallery of Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist bronzes.

The building itself — a blend of Mughal dome, Hindu temple elements, and Gothic windows — is worth careful examination. The museum is well maintained and the galleries are well lit. The palm-garden setting in the Fort heritage district makes the museum part of a natural architectural walking tour. Open daily except Mondays; the audio guide is excellent.
