Dharavi Pottery Colony

The pottery colony within Dharavi is one of the neighbourhood's most visible craft traditions, a cluster of workshops where Kumbhar (potter) families from Gujarat have been producing clay pots, terracotta goods, and traditional Indian earthenware for several generations. The colony produces millions of clay diyas (oil lamps) before Diwali each year, alongside everyday kitchen vessels, flower pots, and decorative items.

Visitors who arrange a tour through Dharavi will pass through the pottery area, where traditional kick-wheels and wood-fired kilns still operate alongside the kilns on the exterior walls of buildings. The area is most active in the months before major festivals. It is one of the best examples of a living urban craft tradition surviving in a megacity context.
