Elephanta Caves

UNESCO rock-cut Shiva temples on a Mumbai harbour island, with a towering Trimurti panel

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island in Mumbai Harbour, reachable by ferry from the Gateway of India (about an hour each way). The caves contain remarkable rock-cut Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva, dating from the 5th to 8th centuries. The main cave features a 6-metre carved panel of Trimurti — Shiva in three aspects — that is one of the finest examples of Indian cave sculpture. Ferries run from the Gateway of India; the round trip takes most of a day.
