Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The Lakshmi Narayan Temple is one of the oldest temples in Sawantwadi, built under the patronage of the Bhonsle royal family. The temple follows the Konkan style of construction — a low-pitched tiled roof, carved wooden pillars at the entrance mandap, and a relatively compact sanctum. The interior stonework is weathered but detailed, with carvings of celestial figures and floral motifs.

The temple sits in the older part of the town near the palace and is an active place of worship rather than a tourist attraction — remove your shoes, dress modestly, and observe quietly. On festival days, particularly during Diwali and Navratri, the temple courtyard fills with activity. The surrounding lanes have a few old merchant houses with carved wooden facades that are worth a look.
