Lacquerware Workshops

Alongside the ganjifa tradition, Sawantwadi is famous across India for its bright lacquered wooden toys and decorative objects. The craft involves turning pieces of soft wood on a traditional foot-powered lathe, then applying lacquer — a shellac-based compound — while the piece spins, building up layers of vivid colour. The finished objects range from simple spinning tops and dolls to elaborate decorative boxes, fruit bowls, and temple figurines.

The workshops are concentrated in the lanes behind the Raj Wada palace and along the main market street. Many artisans work with the palace craft initiative, selling through the palace shop as well as directly. Prices are very reasonable, the pieces are lightweight and pack well, and buying directly from the maker means the money goes to the craftsperson. Several workshops also welcome visitors to watch the lathe process, which is quick and satisfying to observe.
