Shree Govindajee Temple

The Shree Govindajee Temple is the most important religious site in Imphal, a Vaishnavite temple dedicated to Radha and Krishna that stands next to the ruins of the old royal palace. The twin golden domes are visible from across the city, and the complex is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in northeast India. The early morning raas leela performances — classical dance dramas enacting stories from Krishna's life — are among the most beautiful religious performances in the region and open to respectful visitors.

Modest dress is required (shoulders and legs covered). The complex is busiest and most atmospheric during the early morning puja and again in the evening. Non-Hindus are permitted in the outer courtyards but should ask before approaching the inner shrines.

A story
Manipur's royal family converted to Vaishnavism in the early 18th century, and the Govindajee Temple was built shortly afterward as the dynastic temple of the Meitei kings. The conversion was not universally welcomed — the older Sanamahism faith still has deep roots in Manipuri culture, and the tension between the two religious traditions has shaped the region's identity ever since.
