Manipur State Museum is Imphal's main general museum, with collections that move through royal history, textiles, manuscripts, weapons, ethnographic material, and the cultures of Manipur's many communities. It is a useful grounding stop in a region whose history is often poorly explained to outsiders.
The museum is not flashy, but it rewards patient visitors. Go before visiting Kangla Fort, Ima Keithel, or nearby craft shops, and the objects you see around the city will make more sense. The textile and cultural displays are especially helpful for understanding local identity beyond a quick market visit.
