Mao Naga Villages

The villages surrounding Mao town preserve aspects of traditional Mao Naga culture that are genuinely worth seeking out. The Mao Naga are predominantly Christian (Baptist), but the conversion happened within living memory in many communities, and traditional practices around agriculture, weaving, and social organisation remain strong.

The best approach is to arrange a visit through your guesthouse or a local contact — walking into villages unannounced is technically fine but less rewarding than going with someone who can make introductions and explain what you are seeing. The woven textiles produced by Mao Naga women are distinctive and can sometimes be bought directly from weavers in the villages.

A story
The Mao Naga are one of the Naga groups whose traditional villages functioned as independent chieftainships. Each village had its own morung — a communal house where young men slept, learned the community's traditions, and prepared for their role in village defence. The morung system has declined since Christianisation in the twentieth century, but some villages still maintain the structures as cultural heritage.
